The Griswolds do Canada 2013

Day One - August 22, 2013

We all (Thane, Nastassja, Becky, Emily, and I) piled into the mini-van at about 11:15 am. We had reservations at the Staybridge Suites in Southfield, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit). Google Maps said it should only take about six hours to drive the 417 mile. Great - we would get there early evening and could enjoy a nice leisure dinner and the kids could swim in the pool. We arrived at 10:20 pm. Thanks Google Maps.

Actually, we hit two really bad traffic snags - Chicago (no surprise - we hit Chicago at about 2 pm and didn't reach lovely Gary until about 4 pm) and construction near Jackson, Michigan - stopped traffic took about one hour to go 5 miles

We had lunch at IKEA - Nastassja had the Swedish Meatballs - now rebranded the Mr. Ed Special - and chocolate cake. Becky and I had the $1.99 roasted chicken special. Thane had the mushroom and cheese crepes. And Emily had the chicken fingers. Of course, Emily and Nastassja picked out all new furnishings for their rooms . . .

Dinner was at Bob Evans in Battle Creek - oddly only cereal was on the menu.

We also drove through Kalamazoo - but didn't see Horton or his egg at the circus.

Finally, just miles from our hotel, we crossed 8 Mile Road.  Oddly, it was neither slim nor shady.
